#SalimbalSketches: Best Picture

#SalimbalSketches returns! It's been a while since the Oscars -- guess you can tell we've all been kind of buried in work -- but for those of you planning a movie marathon over the next few days (the tail end of Holy Week is a public holiday in the Philippines) here are some tributes by Salimbal members to their favorite films of 2014… and a picture of a girl and a dog form Cristina, because when she saw "Best Picture" as our theme, she immediately thought that it simply must be an image of a cute dog with a cute girl. Never change Tina ;)

Salimbal at the Visprint 3rd Annual Readers' Day: Writers in Talks

Studio Salimbal will be represented at the Visprint Writers In Talks event this Saturday. Mervin Malonzo will be at the Writer's Lifestyle panel, then he'll join Paolo Chikiamco, and Budjette Tan (maybe) for the Komiks Talk panel, and Paolo sticks around for the Publishing 101 panel immediately after. (We may pop into other panels as well, because we have problems shutting up at times.)

Those attending will likely be available for signing books when not on their panels, and many of the books themselves will be discounted, so come on by!

PinoyBatman - #SalimbalSketches Returns

With 2015 comes the return of one of our most popular activities -- #SalimbalSketches ! This time we're limiting sketches to those that take 2 hours maximum to do, and some are churned out in less than a minute, so you may see a lot of variation in the results. We're also doing them within the Studio initially, as they have a week prior to the blog post to get their works in, but if you'd like to do your own interpretations of our themes, feel free!

Preview: Inside Edith

At the coming Komikon, we'll be hosting a debut comic from some friends of the Studio - "Inside Edith" (PHP150) is drawn by Jem Bernaldez and written by Rai Villanueva. It's a horror title, but one for a good cause: profits will go to the medical care of their friend who was diagnosed with POTT'S DISEASE, where his spine is continually deteriorating, which may cause his lower body to become paralyzed due to multiple compression. Here's a brief description of the comic:

It's a space opera kind of week isn't it? If you're looking for more after Guardians of the Galaxy and the Mythspace bundle, you're in luck -- this week is the official digital release of Mythspace: Unfurling of Wings #1, a very human coming-of-age story that just so happens to star someone who isn't human at all!  This week sees the official release of Unfurling of Wings #1 by Paolo Chikiamco and Borg Sinaban -- it's the first time this story has been made available digitally (we divided the physical issue into two parts).

#SalimbalSketches: FAQ (July 28, 2014)

We've been running #SalimbalSketches events over the past few weeks, and after the massive success that was the #PinoyMagicalGirls theme, we decided to put together a short F.A.Q.

What is #SalimbalSketches ?

Patterned after #SketchDailies, #SalimbalSketches  is an event that prompts creators to make artworks that fall under a weekly theme or subject. The submissions are collected every Friday in a post that also announces the theme or subject for the following week..

Nominations Open for the Komikon Awards 2014

Nominees are now being accepted for the 4th Komikon Readers' Choice Awards. The awards this year cover the period from July 2011 to December 2013 -- that's a long span of time, one where Studio Salimbal did not yet exist. But all of us were active in komiks during that time, so here's a list of our members and/or works that are elibile to be nominated, in case you need to jog your memories. :)

The making of "The Other Half"

NOEL PASCUAL:

Makina was probably the first story I had ever pitched to Mervin. This was during the Aklatan event when I was selling Crime-Fighting Call Center Agents at one of the tables and I got to hang out with him along some of our other friends in indie komiks . He liked the concept I pitched and we had been working on that story on-and-off ever since. (Makina, by the way, is going to be one of our longer works under Studio Salimbal, you have to watch out for it.)

Welcome to Phase One

... well, actually, if you want to be strict about it, this is more like Phase Four or Five... a lot of people have been putting in a lot of work into Studio Salimbal over the past year, and even beyond that. We've been pestering people on social networks, we were at the Summer Komikon, we even held that launch event back on April 6... but this milestone, the website launch, it feels like a beginning. For good reason: the Internet is a big part of our identity as a studio.
